On July 9, 2010, the NASSP Board of Directors passed the following resolution regarding the General Educational Development (GED):
BE IT RESOLVED THAT: NASSP recognizes the GED credential as a viable measure of high school completion for students who do not receive a regular high school diploma. However, recent research studies have concluded that individuals who receive a GED have economic and social outcomes similar to high school dropouts.
THEREFORE, the Board’s position is that the GED is not equivalent to a high school diploma for the purpose of calculating graduation rates.
