Reston, VA – Today’s announcement that the Trump administration will end DACA plunged 800 thousand young people-many of them our students-back into fear and uncertainty about their futures. That condition severely compromises their ability to learn, not to mention their peace of mind and their very survival. Our attention must now turn to Congress to demand an immediate and unconditional passage of the bipartisan DREAM Act of 2017, introduced by Senators Durbin (D-IL) and Graham (R-SC), and Representatives Roybal-Allard (D-CA) and Ros-Lehtinen (R-CA).

To our nation’s school leaders: I call on you to continue your fervent efforts to create a safe, welcoming environment that values each student, regardless of their origin or immigration status. And to the young people affected by today’s decision: you belong in school. Continue to learn and grow and become your best selves. This nation-your nation-needs every bit of the contribution you will make to our common future.
