Reston, VA – JoAnn Bartoletti, executive director of the National Association of Secondary School Principals, issued the following statement on President Trump’s budget proposal for FY 2018.

“The president’s FY 2018 budget proposal is a detrimental blow to states working diligently to develop Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) plans and to the school leaders who will implement them. The deliberatively crafted and bipartisan ESSA reflects Congress’s high aspirations for the use of federal education funds, specifically under Title I, Title II, and Title IV, which empower principals to support students with the greatest need, improve their skills and those of their teachers, and implement schoolwide programs to help all students succeed. Cutting programs proven to help educators improve and students achieve not only violates the spirit of ESSA, it betrays the trust of the American people who count on their elected officials to preserve the common good that is public education. We call on Congress to be vigilant in their duties—to reject this budget proposal and craft one aligned with the ideals they expressed in ESSA.​”
